Discover Biodiversity at the Waterwheel
This Biodiversity Month, the Yarra Ranges is coming alive with an opportunity to discover, record and celebrate the incredible plants, fungi and animals that call our region home.
Yarra Ranges Council is joining councils across Melbourne in the Melbourne Biodiversity Blitz 2026, a friendly competition to see who can record the greatest number of species on iNaturalist.
And what better place to begin your biodiversity adventure than the Waterwheel?
Come and make the Waterwheel your destination for exploring the natural world. Wander through the surrounding landscape, look closely at the plants growing beside the paths, listen for birds, search for insects and fungi, and discover the extraordinary diversity hiding in plain sight. Record what you find on iNaturalist and become part of a growing body of citizen science that helps scientists and researchers understand and protect our natural environment.
Every observation counts. Every species tells a story.
Whether you’re an experienced nature enthusiast or simply curious about what lives in your backyard, the Waterwheel is a place to stop, explore, connect and discover the biodiversity of the Yarra Ranges.
The Melbourne Biodiversity Blitz brings together councils including Baw Baw, Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, City of Yarra, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Hobsons Bay, Kingston, Knox, Latrobe, Manningham, Mornington Peninsula, Nillumbik, Port Phillip, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges.
Keep an eye on the Melbourne Biodiversity Blitz 2026 project page to see which council is leading the species race, then head out and start exploring.
Come to the Waterwheel. Look closer. Discover more. Record what you find.
